Trimester 1 Project

We have started the Journeys project for trimester one. Each student will research a Third World Country and learn as much as possible about the country. The goal is to understand why a country is considered Third World or Underdeveloped and why many remain that way.
We began this project last week and will continue working on it until the end of the trimester. Each student is required to write down questions they want answered about the country and get them signed by a parent. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Dunn or Mr. Nordmann.

Week of ending 10/10

Grades 6/7- This week we discussed the Ancient Egyptians. We will be covering the Geography of the region, reasons for civilization and several aspects of the history of the people. Students will be teaching each other one of four areas. They are: The Religion (including Gods and Goddesses), Theories of how the pyramids were built, The Mummification Process and The Curse of the Pharaohs.
On Monday groups will be teaching this information to the class. All materials need to be ready when students arrive to class as there will not be time to print, etc. If you have a PowerPoint Presentation, please email it to me by class time on Monday.

Grade 8- As we learn more about the Revolutionary War, we decided to take a day to work on teamwork and communication skills. Students worked in groups to build a bridge that would allow a chalkboard eraser "boat" to pass freely underneath as well as hold the most weight possible. Groups were not allowed to talk and had to rely on other forms of communication. They earned more tape by working cooperatively without talking. They soon learned that the amount of tape that was originally provided would not be enough and that they would have to earn extra tape to be successful. We will be testing the durability of the bridges on Monday.

Fundraisers

In an effort to generate funds for Wolf Ridge we are doing a small fundraiser in school. This coming week students can wear sunglasses in class...for $2 each day.

The students are also putting together a sign-up sheet for a lock-in after school. It is still in the very early stages and I will pass on information as I receive it.

September 28th

Grades 6/7- Students presented the Code of Hammurabi in class. We also discussed the Hanging Gardens of Babylon and the artwork of the Babylonians. If students did not finish the drawing in class, it becomes homework to be turned in at the start of class on Monday. Monday will be used to review and ask questions for the test on the Sumerians, Akkadians and Babylonians. The test will be Tuesday. Be ready for it!

Grade 8- We are still duscussing the American Revolution, including the origins of the Navy and important individuals in this time period. Each student was given a person to research. They were to find out information about his/her life as well as what role he or she played in the American Revolution. This was due at the end of class on Friday. If it was not turned in, it can be handed in on Monday morning for partial credit. If it is emailed to me before the weekend is over, you will still receive credit. Be prepared for a test next Friday.

Have a safe weekend.

Late September

Grades 6/7- We have discussed the Sumerians, Akkadians and are now talking about the Babylonians. The Code of Hammurabi has been a topic of discussion in class, as the students are very interested. We had a quiz earlier this week to prepare for the test, which will be early next week...plan for Monday. Be sure to review your notes as the test will be more difficult than the quiz.

Grade 8- The class participated in an activity that brought the Stamp Act and the other taxes imposed by the English Parliament into a real life situation. We discussed how the colonists thought it was unfair to be taxed and the students agreed that they would have rebelled as well. We will continue by discussing the American Revolution.

If you read this post, please add a comment stating that you have read this, and you will receive extra credit.

Sept. 10-14

Grades 6/7- Create a country project. We are beginning our Mesopotamia section and have started by discussing the Sumerians. We will continue for a few weeks and will have a test on or around October 2nd. Students created a country in groups to understand the framework of a civilization and bring it into terms they are more familiar with. They were very creative and interesting.

Grade 8- The students learned about the three branches of government and how they work together to pass a bill into a law. We had ice cream as the final step of the lesson. We also discussed the system of checks and balances within the government. We will continue for another week or so, and will culminate with a test on the Amendments to the Constitution and checks and balances.

Each class will make a class flag that will represent each person in the class as well as the group.
We are starting our Ancient Civilizations section of the curriculum with Mesopotamia and the Sumerians. There will not be homework this weekend.

Wolf Ridge Information Sheet

An information sheet was available at Odyssey's Open House for Adventure Week in the middle school. With several families unable to attend, I have been handing out the sheet to those students. The trip will be from May 27-May 30. It will cost approximately $200 per person and will cover lodging, food and transportation. We are encouraging everyone to attend. There will be multiple fundraising opportunities to raise the money to keep the out of pocket expense low. The second choice for Adventure Week will be to remain at Odyssey on those days in May and take field trips around the immediate area. The cost for those days will be approximately $80. Please send the form back stating which option your child will be choosing so we can report accurate numbers to Wolf Ridge. Please email or call me with any questions.
Thanks.
